Book a Learning Vacation: The Top Five Learning Vacation
Destinations
Maybe you are tired of the standard summer vacations – only so many trips to the amusement park, the pool, or zoo
that you can handle. Maybe you want your kids to get out more and see more of the world. Or maybe you are just
curious about finding something else out about the world and cultures and peoples in it. For your next vacation,
consider something more educational to expand your horizons.
A great way to explore the world and learn about new cultures is through language. A great place to consider is
Canada’s POINT3 language school in Montreal. Classes start every Monday, and offer total immersion into French.
Classes are held from 2 to 6 pm Monday through Friday, with an outing every week. After the outing, in class
discussions are used to help students explore what they are learning in their new language. Students are encouraged
to talk to local people as well to improve their conversational abilities. There is an aspect of adventure too –
some of the outdoor tours include skiing, wildlife, and nature tours. You will come home with a much better
understanding of the French language and culture.
If art is more your taste, consider spending some time studying art in Mexico. The Instituto Allende, located in
San Miguel de Allende, offers programs for credit and for non-credit for all ages. Students can stay and study to
earn a bachelor or master of fine arts. Or, if it is just a vacation that you prefer, month-long courses are
offered in painting, jewelry making, photography, sculpture, and much more. The classes are only 9 hours a week and
cost about $300 for the month. During your off time, you can spend time immersing yourself in the language and
culture of Mexico. Located in the mountains of Mexico, this nearly 450-year-old city offers stunning vacation
homes, hot springs, beautiful mountain views, and an air of the colonial opulence that once funded it.
If you are a more active person, kickboxing might be the ticket for you. The Fairtex Muay Thai Fitness Camp in
Thailand offers classes for both the spiritual and physical training for those interested in kickboxing. You can
choose a package with shared rooms or private rooms depending on your budget. All skill levels are welcome. The
basic package starts around $25 a day and includes a full three-hour workout with bag and pad work, as well as
clenching practice and conditioning work. During your down time they offer tours to a crocodile farm, paintball,
and tours to local islands.
If the thought of all that working out makes you hungry, maybe you should consider going to France to learn
cooking. Spending a week in Provence with Anne and David Reinauer will let you get a jump on your French cooking.
Vacations last one week and you stay at the couple’s beautiful 18th century farmhouse. The package includes 6
nights of accommodations, 6 breakfasts, 3 lunches, and 5 dinners with unlimited French wine, all excursions, and 5
cooking classes, each of which lasts 3 to 5 hours. To plan for the classes, you will visit local spots to get
ingredients. Depending on the season, this might include a visit to a goat farm for cheese, a 250-year-old factory
for olive oil, a trout farm for fresh fish, or a tour of area wine producers for wine. During down time swim in the
pool or enjoy the mountains on foot, bike, or horseback.
For Christians, a popular learning destination is Greece. The Biblical Archeology Society gives an amazing tour
exploring the ancient cities, tombs, and monuments that make Greece so interesting. You can follow in the footsteps
of Alexander the great and religious explorers searching for the roots of Christianity. A religions and classics
professor who will discuss and explore religious diversity and how it affected this society leads the class. Cost
of the tour includes 12 overnight stays in hotels with all the modern comforts, daily breakfast, 11 dinners, and
once lunch in restaurants with typical Greek food, a winery visit with wine tasting, and English-speaking guide,
transportation for all visits, and admission fees to all the sites on the trip.
No matter where you decide to go in the world, choosing an educational vacation will expand your mind and
worldview. Choose to take a vacation for your mind the next time!
